Michigan i/ˈmɪʃᵻɡən/ is a state located in the Great Lakes and midwestern regions of the United States. The name Michigan is the French form of the Ojibwa word mishigamaa, meaning "large water" or "large lake". Michigan is the tenth most populous of the 50 United States, with the 11th most extensive total area (the largest state by total area east of the Mississippi River). Its capital is Lansing, and the largest city is Detroit.
Michigan is the only state to consist of two peninsulas. The Lower Peninsula, to which the name Michigan was originally applied, is often noted to be shaped like a mitten. The Upper Peninsula (often referred to as "the U.P.") is separated from the Lower Peninsula by the Straits of Mackinac, a five-mile (8 km) channel that joins Lake Huron to Lake Michigan. The two peninsulas are connected by the Mackinac Bridge. The state has the longest freshwater coastline of any political subdivision in the world, being bounded by four of the five Great Lakes, plus Lake Saint Clair. As a result, it is one of the leading U.S. states for recreational boating. Michigan also has 64,980 inland lakes and ponds. A person in the state is never more than six miles (9.7 km) from a natural water source or more than 85 miles (137 km) from a Great Lakes shoreline.
A special prosecutor generally is a lawyer from outside the government appointed by an attorney general or, in the United States, by Congress to investigate a government official for misconduct while in office. A reasoning for such an appointment is that the governmental branch or agency may have political connections to those it might be asked to investigate. Inherently, this creates a conflict of interest and a solution is to have someone from outside the department lead the investigation. The term "special prosecutor" may have a variety of meanings from one country to the next, from one government branch to the next within the same country, and within different agencies within each government branch. Critics of the use of special prosecutors argue that these investigators act as a "fourth branch" to the government because they are not subject to limitations in spending or have deadlines to meet.
Attorneys in the United States may be appointed/hired particularly or employed generally by different branches of the government to investigate. When appointed/hired particularly by the judicial branch to investigate and, if justified, seek indictments in a particular judicial branch case, the attorney is called special prosecutor. When appointed/hired particularly by a governmental branch or agency to investigate alleged misconduct within that branch or agency, the attorney is called independent counsel. When employed by the state or political subdivision to assist in a particular judicial branch case when the public interest so requires, the attorney is called special counsel.
Good Counsel may refer to:
In the culture and practice of some Christian churches — mainly, but not solely, the Roman Catholic Church — a shrine to the Virgin Mary (or Marian shrine) is a shrine marking an apparition or other miracle ascribed to the Blessed Virgin Mary, or a site on which is centered a historically strong Marian devotion. Such locales are often the destination of pilgrimages.
Some of the largest shrines arose from reported Marian apparitions to young and simple people on remote hilltops that had hardly been heard of prior to the reported apparition. The story of Saint Juan Diego's reported vision of Our Lady of Guadalupe in 1531 is similar to that of Saint Bernadette Soubirous' vision in 1858 of Our Lady of Lourdes. Both saints reported a miraculous woman on a hilltop who asked them to request that the local priests build a chapel at the site of the vision. Both visions included a reference to roses and led to large churches being built at the sites. Like Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico, Our Lady of Lourdes is a major Catholic symbol in France. Both visionaries were eventually declared saints.
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, often abridged as Last Week Tonight, is an American late-night talk and news satire television program airing on Sundays on HBO in the United States and HBO Canada, and on Mondays (originally Tuesdays) on Sky Atlantic in the United Kingdom. The half-hour long show premiered on Sunday, April 27, 2014, and is hosted by comedian John Oliver. Last Week Tonight shares some similarities with Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, where Oliver was previously featured as a correspondent and fill-in host, as it takes a satirical look at news, politics and current events on a weekly basis.
Oliver has said that he has full creative freedom, including free rein to criticize corporations. His initial contract with HBO was for two years with an option for extension. In February 2015, it was announced that the show has been renewed for two additional seasons of 35 episodes each. Oliver and HBO programming president Michael Lombardo have discussed extending the show from half an hour to a full hour and airing more than once a week after Oliver "gets his feet under him".

People like president Theodore Roosevelt, and author John Muir, help to popularize setting aside public lands for the preservation of wildlife and other natural resources. Because of this foresight, Michigan's residents and visitors can enjoy one of the nation's premier park systems.

Lansing, Michigan May 20, 2015 Civil asset forfeiture is a legal process that allows the police to seize and sell a citizen's private property, even if no crime has been charged against the owner of that property. Several states have recently reformed their civil asset forfeiture laws, and Eric Holder, the U.S. Attorney General, has called for improving federal laws pertaining to this practice. Michigan has one of the worse-rated civil asset forfeiture laws in the nation, and the panelists listed below will discuss what reforms the state should consider and why. Panelists: Rep. Jeff Irwin (D-Ann Arbor) Dan Korobkin, deputy legal director, American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan Lee McGrath, legislative counsel and managing attorney, Institute for Justice
My friend Nate had a run-in with the local police department in Orange County, Southern California and was allowed to leave traveling freely by law enforcement. WITHOUT STATE LICENSE PLATES, WITHOUT PRESENTING A DRIVERS LICENSE, AND NOT ALLOWING THE OFFICER ACCESS TO SEE THE VIN NUMBER. I am so proud of Nate for having the balls and taking the initiative to overcome the fear, but I am also extremely proud of this officer for choosing to do the right thing and not violate this man's rights. If you want to get some of the tools that Nate was using in this video, they are available at: http://shop.freedomfromgovernment.org And don't forget to visit http://freedomfromgovernment.org for lots more information.

Last month the Supreme Court decided what may well be the most important decision of the Term (if not the Roberts Court thus far). In Citizens United, the justices invalidated a provision of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act which barred corporations from spending money on behalf of, or against, candidates for office. They also overturned their precedent in Austin v. Michigan Chamber of Commerce, which had allowed restrictions on corporate speech. Citizens United has been applauded in some quarters as a "free speech" decision, or for eliminating distinctions between corporations and individuals. It has been reviled in other quarters for the same reasons. Polls show unhappiness on both the left and the right. This Forum brings together a set of high-profile experts to talk about Citizens U...
Guardianships are a useful legal tool to help people who lack the capacity to make decisions for themselves – such as those suffering from dementia or developmental disability. In a guardianship proceeding the court appoints a guardian to manage an incapacitated person’s financial assets or personal affairs. The incapacitated person is then known as the “protected person.” A guardian can help ensure that the protected person lives with security and dignity to the greatest extent possible given their circumstances.

The collective promise of the Pledge of Allegiance to secure “justice for all” is one of America’s great unfulfilled promises, says Marsha Levick, Co-Founder of the Juvenile Law Center. Juvenile courts originally operated in an informal, private manner. The history of juvenile law has seen the pendulum swing back and forth from small progressions to scandalous miscarriages of justice such as the “Kids for Cash” story that came out of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Levick illustrates the heartbreaking reality of what happens to children in the justice system whose rights and voices go unconsidered, Levick emphasizes the need to break the cycle of injustice for the two million children arrested each year in our country. Marsha Levick is working to shift public thinking and legal policy nec...
